The Libra Project

The name "Libra Project" implies restoring the balance of historical, economic, cultural, and racial inequality through sharing our stories in playback theatre. Such embodied truth telling between groups with very different perspectives can significantly aid in the long process of reconciliation.

The Centre raises or has raised funds for the following Libra Project programs:

1. Scholarships to the Centre for Playback Theatre's training program in New York for people who would otherwise not have access to playback theatre training (ongoing): The Centre's ability to welcome any interested student, regardless of economic or cultural background, depends on raising funds and a strong commitment to diversity of the student body. Each year students come from 15-20 countries, including Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Playback theatre provides an opportunity for dialogue that is a deep benefit of the training.

2. After the Storm: Mobilizing Playback Theatre for Communities in Crisis (2008): This workshop will train pt practitioners in the complex skill set needed for delivering playback theatre to troubled communities, whether from climate change, violence, or immigration issues. It will take place in New Orleans, devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and be hosted by members of NOLA Playback Theatre, who have been doing extensive work in the community as well as themselves being affected by the storm. We are raising money for scholarships.

3. Emergency Playback Europa (2007): When disaster strikes, people desperately need a forum to share their stories. In September of 2007 a seminar took place in Hungary designed to provide European playback theatre practitioners with the tools for delivering playback theatre to communities suffering from a natural or civil emergency. 4. Katrina Relief Project (2006): The Centre organized a major initiative to bring playback theatre to residents of the US Gulf region devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Because so many of the most severely affected are poor and persons of color, the Centre has a special mission to give them a voice as well as participate in overall disaster recovery. [Read More]

5. Playback theatre training in Angola and Burundi (2001-3): The Centre has sent training teams to Angola and Burundi to work with local acting companies to help them use playback for purposes of social reconstruction. [Read More]
